Exotic meats I’ve tried
During a trip to Japan, I had the opportunity to try some exotic meats. It was at a river barbecue, and the owner of a Brazilian meat supplier came. I tried a bite of each of these:
- camel
- ostrich
- alligator
- kangaroo
Overall, I wasn’t that impressed. Some of them were chewy. Alligator was the best, just like chicken.
At the children’s summer camp I volunteered at, I was offered canned whale meat. It wasn’t bad.
At various sushi conveyor belt restaurants, I’ve stepped out of my comfort zone to try some other food besides the standard raw fish:
- eel
- squid
- octopus
- sea urchin
- basashi (raw horse meat)
On one of my birthdays, I was taken to a buffet. I tried fried fugu, or blowfish. It has to be prepared in a careful way to remove all toxins.
It’s interesting how I always hated seafood all my life. But when I fell in love with Japanese culture (and being an island, fishing is one of its largest industries), suddenly I was openminded and wasn’t disgusted by seafood.
